the haircut

yes, it's a mini mohawk. i am sorry i don't have a "before" picture to show you. over the christmas break from school, i told robin that he could grow out his hair. he did and 2 1/2 months later it was all long, blond and wavy, beautiful actually. the costa rican ladies can't keep their eyes off of it. of course it was mostly uncombed and all in his eyes. 2 weeks after returning to school, the teacher requested that he cut it. it's in the school rule book that the boys keep hair short. on monday i took him to the hair "stylist", not the barber, because he loves to have his hair washed in those salon sinks! what a princess. our stylist, patricia, cut it according to the picture we found in the haircuts book, but the final result wasn't really as cool as robin wanted it to look. he was sad. only after a few tears (his) did she understand his disappointment. she then took out the COOL MEN'S HAIRCUTS book out from behind the counter. we didn't see THAT one! why was she hiding the cool men's haircuts book? anyway, robin saw this modified mohawk and decided that was what he really wanted, so we asked her to change haircut #1 into haircut #2. there was still enough hair to work with, but changing haircuts midstream can be a tricky business in any salon. if you know costa rican culture at all, you'll understand that we were practically chartering unknown hairstyling territory. i prepared robin for a possible haircut castastrophe (possibly resulting in a worst-case scenario "buzz cut") by explaining that he was asking her to try an "artistic experiment" and he would have to try and be understanding and open minded. luckily he liked the result and $3 later we were on our way. everybody happy. ah, costa rica. talk about attracting attention! i don't think costa rica sees many blond mohawks. luckily the "down" version is much more normal looking. p.s. he can't wear the mohawk gelled "up" to school.
the second picture is robin laughing (still) at the poor little girl who peed her pants after riding that giant roller coaster in ohio.
